Police in Florida said remains found a week ago on a beach have been identified as a missing Atlanta man.

Satellite Beach authorities had been looking for Jeremy Knauff, 28, since Nov. 6, when they said he indicated to friends he planned to walk into the Atlantic Ocean, according to a report on Floridatoday.com

Police searched Hamilton Beach in Brevard County and found Knauff’s abandoned rental car, along with his cell phone and car keys on the beach, but did not find him. A search involving the Coast Guard also was unsuccessful.

A surfer found a body a week ago about 60 miles away on a beach in Fort Pierce, in St. Lucie County. That body was identified through dental records Thursday as being Knauff.

“Dental records confirmed this was our missing person,” Cmdr. Brad Hodge, spokesman for the Satellite Beach police, said in a statement obtained by Floridatoday.com. “This hopefully provided some closure for the family while they try to deal with this very tragic situation, especially as the holidays approach.”
