The two people killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday night were not wearing seatbelts, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday.

The wreck occurred in the 1100 block of Hale Road, a secluded area in south Oconee County, around 9 p.m., Chief Deputy Lee Weems told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Investigators believe John David Edwards, 36, of Athens, was driving a 1969 Chevrolet pickup truck westbound on Hale Road when the vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway, struck a road sign, and continued off the roadway, where it struck several trees with its front and left side, according to Gordy Wright, spokesman for the state patrol.

Edwards and a passenger, Stephen Dave Marlow, 23, of Madison, died in the crash, Wright said. Neither Edwards nor Marlow wear wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.
