A suspect accused of running down a 53-year-old woman crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Drive a week ago and fleeing was taken into custody Tuesday, charged with homicide by vehicle.
The arrest of Erick Demons came on the same day funeral services were held for Cassandra Head, the woman who was killed on Feb. 19.
Police say Demons drove through a light on MLK at Bakers Ferry Road in west Atlanta and struck Head around 6 a.m. while she was in the crosswalk. The impact knocked Head onto the sidewalk, and she died at the scene after suffering massive injuries, police said.
Police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said Demons, 40, kept driving after hitting Head. The suspect was taken into custody Tuesday on University Avenue and transported to the Fulton County Jail. He is also charged with hit and run, failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and driving with a suspended license.
