Samsung recalls 2.8 million washing machines

Samsung is taking another product hit as the company has issued another massive product recall.

This time the electronic and appliance company is recalling 2.8 million top-loading washing machines, the CPSC and Samsung announced Friday.

The reason behind the recall is the top can fly off unexpectedly during use, Samsung announced.

The washers were manufactured between March 2011 and now.

The top can detach when consumers use a high-speed cycle with bedding, water-resistant or bulky items, Samsung said in the consumer alert.

Owners of the washers have a few options under the recall.

First, they can get a free in-home repair kit to reinforce the top of the washer. That option will also include a one-year extension of the manufacturer's warranty.

Second choice is a rebate that can be used to buy a new washer and have the new unit installed and the old one removed. The amount is based on the date and model of the old washer. If owners choose a new Samsung washer, they will also get an additional $150 loyalty incentive.

If consumers recently bought one of the recalled appliances, within the past 30 days, they can get a full refund from the place of purchase.

Thirty-four models are included in the recall. There have been 733 reports of either excessive vibration or the top coming off. There have been nine injuries because of it, including a broken jaw, according to the CPSC.

Last month, Samsung recalled all of its Galaxy Note 7 cellphones due to overheating and fire concerns. More than 2.5 million Note 7's were sold world-wide as of September, USA Today reported.
