Richmond County authorities say a man killed by officers responding to a domestic disturbance refused to put down the knife he held to his estranged wife's throat.

Police say 41-year-old Terry Ramsey was shot to death Thursday by officers responding to a 911 call from his 14-year-old son. Authorities say Ramsey was free on $50,000 bond awaiting a murder trial for an August 2008 killing at his home.

His attorney, Gregory Leopard, said Ramsey was defending himself when he shot Richard Paprocki to death.

Ramsey and his wife were separated since April 2008. In 2005, Ramsey's wife filed for divorce, saying he was abusive.

Her name was not released.
