Man accused of Cracker Barrel beating ordered to keep monitoring device
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A judge ordered a man accused of beating an Army soldier outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant last September to continue wearing his monitoring device, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Troy West's attorney had asked Tuesday if the device could be removed. As a part of his bond, a judge ordered West to wear the device and stay out of Clayton County. Cracker Barrel has banned West from the restaurant chain.
West, a white male, was accused of yelling racial slurs while beating Tasha Hill, a black female, in front of her 7-year-old daughter.
According to a police report, West admitted he struck Hill after she spit on him for nearly hitting her daughter when opening a door. However, witnesses say Hill did no such thing.
The case was referred to the FBI Civil Rights Division, citing that it violates the federal hate crime law.
West, who was charged with cruelty to children for beating Hill in front of her daughter, has a trial scheduled to start July 19.
