Georgia lottery officials Tuesday announced record profits for the six-month period ending Dec. 31.

Profits for the period, the first half of the lottery's 2009-10 fiscal year, totaled more than $429 million, surpassing the record set during the previous fiscal year by more than $8.49 million.

"The lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K programs are more important than ever to Georgia's families," Georgia Lottery Corp. president and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco said. "To keep pace with the growing demands on HOPE and Pre-K, we continue to explore fresh and exciting ways to entertain our players and yield new revenues for education."

Among those new initiatives is the implementation of an agreement signed last year to bring the multi-state Powerball lottery to Georgia.

Powerball tickets go on sale in the state on Jan. 31. The Georgia Lottery will also continue to sell Mega Millions tickets.
