A chicken and a rooster are up for adoption at the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter.

Looking to start your own backyard chicken coop? The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter has a bird for you.

The shelter has one young chicken available for adoption. They also had a rooster earlier Monday, but he was “so beautiful” that someone quickly adopted him, said Sheila Fowler, of Gwinnett County’s Community Services department.

“He’s going to be living on a farm,” Fowler said. “He’s living the rooster’s dream.”

Both birds were found as strays walking on the side of the road, Fowler said. No word if they, indeed, crossed the road.

The female chicken still available is up-to-date on any required vaccinations and has had a health check. The adoption fee is waived for the chicken, according to the shelter’s website.

The chicken’s animal ID is 55356. Those numbers can be used when inquiring about adoption, or — let's be honest — you could probably just say “I'm interested in the chicken.” You can contact the shelter at 770-339-3200 or visit the facility at 884 Winder Hwy. in Lawrenceville.
