The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are now official.
Android users and tech enthusiasts tuned in for the much-anticipated March 29 unveiling of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and the event revealed some of the phone’s upcoming features.
Here are the hottest Galaxy S8 features making noise in the tech community after the release:
Better selfie camera
Samsung’s new phone will have a much better front-facing camera for all you selfie enthusiasts. According to the Verge, not only does the camera capture 8-megapixel photos with an f/1.7 lens, it also has auto-focus capabilities.
New personal assistant: Bixby
An extra button on the left side of the phone, under the volume controls, will activate Samsung’s new virtual assistant: Bixby. According to Samsung’s Injong Rhee, Bixby will support nearly every task capable of being performed using a conventional interface, such as touch commands.
There will be two sizes for the Galaxy S8, the S8 and the S8+. One model will have a 5.8-inch display while the other will have a 6.2-inch display.
The 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 price starts at $750, while the 6.2-inch 8+ device starts at $850. However, prices may vary, Macrumors reported.
Big screens and an infinity display
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ will have larger display screens than any of the previous generation models. From BGR.com: “The smaller Galaxy S8 will have a 5.8-inch screen stuffed into a phone that’s just a bit larger than Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 7, and the Galaxy S8+ will cram a massive 6.2-inch display into a phone that’s roughly the same size as the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.”
No more home button on the front
The new device won’t have a home button on the front of the phones, but will include a virtual home button that works the same way.
Unlock with iris scan or fingerprint scan
Just like the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will have an iris scanner for users to unlock their devices with an eye scan.
The fingerprint scanner is now on the back of the phone, right next to the camera lens, Samsung announced.
3D-curved cover glass
Both devices will have Samsung’s 3D-curved cover glass, Kuo said.
New desktop feature
BRG.com reported that the new models will come with a cool new feature — appropriately dubbed “DeX” for “desktop experience” — allowing users to plug their phones into a dock, connect them to a big screen monitor and run Android apps on a desktop. According to the Verge, DeX is a plastic bowl-like stand with a USB-C prong, some ports and a fan.
Five colors: Midnight Black, Arctic Silver, Maple Gold, Coral Blue and Gray
Better battery life
Kuo also reported bigger batteries in the new series: 3,000 mAh battery in the S8 and 3,500 mAh in the S8+.
You can pre-order the phones starting March 30. Both handsets will go on sale online and in stores in the U.S., Canada and across Europe on April 21.
When you pre-order, the purchase includes a Gear VR headset with touch controller.
