Decatur’s Better Together is hosting “Building Community Through Conversation,” 5-7:30 p.m. Sept 24 at Beacon Municipal Center, Ebster Gym, 105 Electric Ave. There is no cost but reservations are required with space limited to 200.

Conversations will be supported by table facilitators with participants invited to share experiences and perspectives on various topics. Also, dinner is included.

Decatur’s Confederate monument, the subject of intense scrutiny from a number of diverse cultural groups over the past month, will likely receive attention.

“None of our questions are monument specific,” said Renae Madison, Decatur’s communications specialist. “But I’d expect it to come up.”

Earlier this week Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett said she also expected a monument discussion Monday.

The Better Together advisory board was created last November to carry out a 21-page community plan that incorporates 60 action points covering differences in, among others, culture, race, age, politics and economic resources.
