As Halloween draws nearer, the nightly sight of jack-o’-lantern peering out from stoops is becoming more commonplace. But the carving up of pumpkins doesn’t have to be something you do, or watch others do, solely inside the privacy of your own home.

Here are a few public pumpkin-carving events going on around Atlanta in the coming weeks.

• Highland Walk is having a community carving event Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Beltline. Pumpkins and carving supplies will be available for a $10 donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Food and live music will also be located on the grassy triangle at the apartment complex near a path to the Beltline.

• The Atlanta Botanical Garden will host the "Great Pumpkin-Carving Contest" on Oct. 26 from 7 to 8 p.m. Guests can watch local chefs and designers, who will have 25 minutes to carve a giant pumpkin, compete. Audience applause declares the winner.

• "Pumpkins & Paella" will be held on the patio at Cooks & Soldiers from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 29. Sales from $15 pumpkins will go directly to benefit The Giving Kitchen. It's a kid-friendly event, but there will be paella and sangria available.
