The Marietta Board of Education will hold three public hearings this month on its intention to maintain the existing millage rate of 17.97 which is 7.71 percent over the rollback millage rate.

Hearings on this tax increase will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. July 17 at the Marietta City Schools Central Office Building, 250 Howard St., Marietta.

Board members will decide at 6 p.m. July 17 whether to keep the same millage rate.

Georgia law requires three public hearings be held to allow the community an opportunity to express their opinions on the tax increase even though the millage rate will remain unchanged, according to a MCS statement.

For the Fiscal Year 2019 budget from July 1 through June 30, 2019, the MCS’s projected general revenue is $100,436,367, a 6.1 percent increase over this budget year.

Of that amount, 52 percent will come from local tax revenue, 47 percent from state revenue, 1 percent from other local revenue and $400,000 in state/federal grants.

Expenditures will be $103,585,803, a 5.3 percent increase with the $3,149,436 difference to be paid out of the MCS’s nearly $15,875,000 million undesignated fund balance.
