“Johns Creek Tunnel,” the pedestrian tunnel mural under Medlock Bridge Road, will be formally unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21.

Dozens of local volunteers worked under Indian artist Hanif Kureshi to create the 130-foot long mural under Medlock Bridge just south of McGinnis Ferry Road. The project involved the city, Johns Creek Convention & Visitors Bureau, Georgia Department of Transportation, Urban Catalyst Lab and Atlanta artist William Massey.

The work “features overlapping geometric shapes that symbolize the geography of the city’s community areas, and Kureshi’s signature letterforms represent the many languages spoken by Johns Creek residents,” officials said in an announcement.

Viewed from outside the east tunnel entrance, the design takes on the shape of a heart and a peace sign, illustrating a sense of unity, Kureshi said.

The mural unveiling coincides with the Johns Creek International Festival, which starts at 11 a.m. Saturday on the fields across from the Atlanta Athletic Club.
