How hipster is Atlanta? City ranks among top in the world, study finds

From indie music, beards galore and an appreciation of vintage fashion, the hipster subculture is no stranger to Atlanta. In fact, the Georgia city was recently recognized among the most hipster in the world.

Relocation company MoveHub published its 2018 International Hipster Index for which analysts compared 446 cities based on the number of hipster hotspots per 100,000 city residents. Touchstones included number of vegan eateries, coffee shops, vintage boutiques, tattoo studios and record stores.

Only cities with populations above 150,000 were included in the study.

Brighton and Hove, a seaside city in the United Kingdom, earned top honors on the list, followed by Portland, Oregon, which MoveHub called "the hipster king of North America."

With a hipster score of 6.5 out of 10, Atlanta ranked 14th overall and 11th in the United States.

According to a 2015 American Community Survey, which assigned a "hipster score" to Atlanta neighborhoods based on number of cafes and yoga studios per 10,000 people, percent of residents with bachelor's degrees and percent of residents ages 20-34, three Atlanta neighhoods scored the highest.

The most hipster neighborhoods in the city, according to the survey, were Atlantic Station, Brookwood and Buckhead Village.
