Gwinnett County Planning Commission Chair Chuck Warbington intends to leave his position at the end of the year.

Warbington is also Lawrenceville’s city manager. That job is requiring more attention because of an “extensive transformation” including a $200 million mixed-use development, expanded Aurora Theatre and new hotel in downtown Lawrenceville, Warbington said in a statement. Leaving the commission will allow Warbington to put his full focus on that transformation, he said.

The planning commission consists of nine members, all appointed by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. Those members review potential rezonings, special use permits and other long-term planning projects and provide recommendations for approvals and denials. Those recommendations are given to the board of commissioners when projects from massive mixed-use developments and apartment complexes to reductions in buffer zones.

Warbington has been a longtime member of the commission, serving for 15 years. He’s been chairman of the commission for the last six years. Once he leaves his post after the Dec. 3 meeting, a new chair will be chosen from the remaining commissioners. A new member will also be chosen by county Commissioner Tommy Hunter, who appointed Warbington to his current term.

Warbington believes he’s leaving the commission in capable hands.

“Gwinnett County citizens can be assured that the current members of the planning commission listen to its citizens and have tough recommendations every month,” Warbington said. “I encourage them to continue to engage the citizens and hold fast to the future land use plan providing a bright sustainable future for Gwinnett.”
