Atlanta Gas Light is alerting its customers Monday of the “latest phone scam” targeting account holders.

Someone claiming they represented Atlanta Gas Light called a customer and said her natural gas service was scheduled for disconnection due to a past due bill, according to a press release. The caller allegedly mentioned a $500 reconnection fee would be required to restore service, but hung up when the customer referenced contacting an attorney.

The customer immediately contacted her certified natural gas marketer — Atlanta Gas Light doesn’t bill customers directly — and confirmed the account was not past due or scheduled for disconnection.

A second person has reported receiving a similar call.

Atlanta Gas Light, which maintains the pipeline infrastructure, responds to emergencies and reads meters monthly, say its representatives will never call customers regarding their natural gas bill.

Customers who suspect or experience fraud, or feel threatened during contact with an individual posing as a company representative, should contact local authorities. They should then call the customer care center phone number listed on their bill, the company says.
