Hundreds of residents living in the Darlington Apartments in Buckhead learned earlier this month that they had 60 days to find a new place to live due to upcoming renovations at the complex.

And those tenants, who pay some of the lowest rents in one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the country, are not happy about being displaced.

A Facebook event has emerged, organizing a rally for the Darlington tenants.

For a Sept. 6 AJC story on the complex, Varden Capital Properties declined to comment after initially agreeing to an interview. The company also did not respond to messages Monday requesting comment about the rally and residents' complaints.

The Mayor’s Office also declined to comment, but the city’s Office of Constituent Services is looking into what, if any, assistance can be offered to displaced residents, a spokesman for the office said.

As of Monday morning, 14 people committed to going on the event Facebook page, while another 71 marked themselves as interested.

A description for the event claims that since the complex gave tenants the 60-day notice, the air conditioning has been shut off and there have been four fires in the complex.

The description adds, “Community allies will be holding a rally to shine a light on their inhumane treatment by landlord Trace McCreary of Varden Capital Properties who purchased the longtime affordable complex a year ago.”
