Three candidates for judgeship

The state Judicial Nominating Commission recently recommended three candidates to fill an opening on the Georgia Court of Appeals.

Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to choose from the following: Dougherty County Superior Court Judge Stephen Goss, Fayette County State Court Judge Carla Wong McMillan and Tift County State Court Judge Larry Mims.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Judge Harris Adams.

FBI honors ISB executive director

Special Agent in Charge Mark F. Giuliano with FBI Atlanta, presented the Director’s Award for Community Leadership for 2012 to Soumaya Khalifa on Dec. 13.

As founder and Executive Director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta, Khalifa has worked within the community to provide for a better understanding of American Muslims and how they live their lives.

Khalifa will be present as Atlanta FBI’s honoree among 56 selectees from around the country at a national ceremony with FBI Director Robert S. Mueller on April 5.

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers needed

AARP Tax-Aide is seeking Atlanta volunteers to provide free tax preparation and filing assistance to area taxpayers.

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers receive free IRS-certified tax training and learn new skills while giving back to their local communities.

DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and other elected officials will conduct the Unity Inauguration and Swearing-in Ceremony 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Philip AME Church, 240 Candler Road SE, Atlanta.

Doors open at 4:45 p.m.

Roswell Christmas tree recycling Saturday

Keep Roswell Beautiful has organized the annual “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling event for Roswell residents on Saturday.

The drop-off time is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Home Depot stores on Holcomb Bridge Road in the Holcomb Woods Shopping Center and on Woodstock Road across from Publix.

“Bring one for the Chipper” is a statewide initiative which reuses trees by chipping them into mulch that is used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects and individual yards.
