The City of Chamblee was recognized by the Atlanta Regional Commission as a Green Community Bronze level. The Green Communities Program is a voluntary certification program that helps local governments implement measures that will reduce their environmental impact.

All winners earned certification points for sustainable measures implemented in their communities. Some measures that earned the City of Chamblee certification points include:

· installing end-of-trip bicycle facilities at all its complexes and requiring at least three bike parking spaces at many types of new developments;

· developing City Hall as an infill building so that it could be located at the heart of downtown;

· adopting a policy to purchase environmentally-preferable goods. It also promotes using reusable, recyclable or compostable products;

· achieving recognition as the fifth certified National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat in the country;

· adopting smart growth policies to encourage the development of streetscapes that are both more aesthetically desirable and friendlier for a wider range of users; and

· promoting parking maximums and requiring permeable paving for every parking space over the minimum requirement.

In metro Atlanta, 20 local governments — 13 cities and seven counties – are currently certified under the ARC Green Communities program. This is the first program in the country to promote sustainability through a green certification program for local governments.
