The biggest yards in America are closer than you might think

If a small town vibe within driving distance of the bustling city life is your speed, then you more than likely call a suburb of Atlanta home. This week’s Best of Atlanta poll found out which suburb has a special place in your heart.

Most people have an idea of what their "dream home" would be like, and that idea includes a big yard.

If you're looking for a house in the Atlanta area, you're in luck; the biggest yards in America can be found in Gwinnett County.

Zillow Research, a part of house-hunting site Zillow.com, looked at lot sizes of homes in America's 100 largest cities — and determined that if you want a big yard, you should move to the South.

"Lawrenceville, GA, the second-oldest city in the Atlanta metro, tops the list with an average lot size of an incredible 14,375 square feet," Zillow determined.

"That’s like living on one-quarter of a football field. Imagine your Slip N’ Slide starting in the end zone and running all the way to the 25-yard line!"

The best state for space isn't Georgia, however: North Carolina owns that title. Five of the top 10 cities for big backyards — Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Durham, Charlotte and Greensboro — are in North Carolina.

The average lot size there is 12,000-14,000 square feet, according to Zillow.

But is yardwork not your thing? Move to Baltimore, Maryland, where the lots are one-eighth of those in Lawrenceville at an average size of 1,710 square feet.
