Atlanta BeltLine focuses on University Avenue development

Atlanta BeltLine officials are hoping to get some help making development plans for the University Avenue area in downtown Atlanta.

Areas around Turner Field and the Adair Park and Pittsburgh communities could soon get some redevelopment help from Atlanta BeltLine.

The greenspace developer, which is creating a 22-mile loop of trails along mostly abandoned train tracks in the center of Atlanta, has issued a Request for Proposal for the creation of three different development plans along University Avenue in downtown Atlanta.

The move is part of the BeltLine’s efforts to grow its westside trail. The Beltline’s eastside trail has spurred extraordinary growth in new housing and restaurants and has become one of metro Atlanta’s most desirable addresses.

But it also has driven up home prices, forcing lower-income families to move and the city and the BeltLine to push for more affordable housing in future developments.

The University Avenue corridor runs approximately 2 miles along Avon Avenue and University from Murphy Avenue to Hank Aaron Drive, the BeltLine said in RFP documents.

Proposals are due by 3 p.m. April 21.
