Georgia’s public school students made some improvement in the math and English portions of the state’s annual assessment of student performance in those subjects and others, officials announced Thursday.

The percentage of students achieving the Proficient Learner level and above on the Georgia Milestones increased or held steady on 18 of 26 End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) assessments, officials said. Where scores decreased, they did so by three percentage points or less, officials said.

The Georgia Milestones are administered starting in third grade. They measure students' mastery of state educational standards in subjects such as English, math and science. The exams were administered in each Georgia public school system last Spring.

The scores determine whether students fall into one of four categories, from non-proficient to complete mastery, and they count for one-fifth of a high school student's course grade.
