Children across Georgia have access to free meals this summer

State officials have kicked off Georgia’s annual program offering free meals for needy families this summer.

First Lady Sandra Deal, DeKalb CEO Lee May and others helped launch Georgia's free summer meals program Thursday morning at Mason Mill Park in Decatur.

The free meals are available for children 18 and under (and some eligible adults) throughout the state through the Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered in Georgia by early child-care state officials.

Over one million of Georgia’s school-aged children are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch when school is in session. The program provides free meals in low-income areas during the summer when students are out of school and may not have access to well-balanced meals.
