Georgia’s 35 public colleges and universities have implemented numerous cuts as they try to weather the recession and a loss of $275 million in state funding. Here are some of the cuts already implemented for fiscal 2010, which began July 1:
University of Georgia
Cuts: 343
Layoffs: 0
Impact: Because cuts include 121 instructional faculty positions, students will have larger classes or have trouble getting classes they need. More part-time faculty will be used.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Cuts: 140
Layoffs: 75
Impact: Higher student/faculty ratios. Students will pay for some services that had been free, such as transcripts.
Georgia State University
Cuts: 300
Layoffs: 30
Impact: Larger classes. College will eliminate some courses with small enrollments.
Medical College of Georgia
Cuts: 88
Layoffs: 0
Impact: Delayed expanding some programs.
Georgia Southern University
Cuts: 26
Layoffs: 0
Impact: Cuts in public safety may make it harder to respond to students.
Valdosta State University
Cuts: 68
Layoffs: 3
Impact: Cut money for library books and eliminated a lecture series.
Albany State University
Cuts: 36
Layoffs: 0
Impacts: Few additions to meet needs of growing enrollment.
Armstrong Atlantic State University
Cuts: 12
Layoffs: 1
Impact: Fewer people to help students. Delayed replacing campus police cars.
Augusta State University

Impact: Can’t pay for a program to increase campus security patrols.
Clayton Sate University

Impact: Reduced library hours. Couldn’t hire more tutors for students.

Impact: Postponed replacing more than 300 computers in student labs.

Impact: Put off enhancing some programs for students.
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

Impact: Using part-time and adjunct faculty instead of full-time faculty.

Impact: Cuts may hurt student advisement and retention. Reduced campus police officers.
