List: The impact of college cuts

Georgia’s 35 public colleges and universities have implemented numerous cuts as they try to weather the recession and a loss of $275 million in state funding. Here are some of the cuts already implemented for fiscal 2010, which began July 1:

University of Georgia

Cuts: 343

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Because cuts include 121 instructional faculty positions, students will have larger classes or have trouble getting classes they need. More part-time faculty will be used.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Cuts: 140

Layoffs: 75

Impact: Higher student/faculty ratios. Students will pay for some services that had been free, such as transcripts.

Georgia State University

Cuts: 300

Layoffs: 30

Impact: Larger classes. College will eliminate some courses with small enrollments.

Medical College of Georgia

Cuts: 88

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Delayed expanding some programs.

Georgia Southern University

Cuts: 26

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Cuts in public safety may make it harder to respond to students.

Valdosta State University

Cuts: 68

Layoffs: 3

Impact: Cut money for library books and eliminated a lecture series.

Albany State University

Cuts: 36

Layoffs: 0

Impacts: Few additions to meet needs of growing enrollment.

Armstrong Atlantic State University

Cuts: 12

Layoffs: 1

Impact: Fewer people to help students. Delayed replacing campus police cars.

Augusta State University

Cuts: 4

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Can’t pay for a program to increase campus security patrols.

Clayton Sate University

Cuts: 6

Layoffs: 8

Impact: Reduced library hours. Couldn’t hire more tutors for students.

Columbus State University

Cuts: 15

Layoffs: 9

Impact: Officials say cuts put college “in a very vulnerable position.”

Georgia College & State University

Cuts: 11

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Expect larger class sizes and higher student/faculty ratios.

Georgia Southwestern State University

Cuts: 5.36

Layoffs: 0.5

Impact: Eliminated a continuing education program for older adults.

Kennesaw State University

Cuts: 46

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Large classes and long wait lists for some courses.

North Georgia College & State University

Cuts: N/A

Layoffs: N/A

Impact: Cut money toward a program to improve freshman retention.

Savannah State University

Cuts: 17

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Cut back on library acquisitions.

Southern Polytechnic State University

Cuts: 14.5

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Postponed replacing more than 300 computers in student labs.

University of West Georgia

Cuts: 13

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Put off enhancing some programs for students.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

Cuts: 13

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Using part-time and adjunct faculty instead of full-time faculty.

College of Coastal Georgia

Cuts: 17

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Cuts may hurt student advisement and retention. Reduced
 campus police officers.

Dalton State College

Cuts: N/A

Layoffs: N/A

Impact: Unable to lease space for more students.

Gainesville State College

Cuts: 0

Layoffs: 0

Impacts: Unable to replace some equipment.

Georgia Gwinnett College

Cuts: 0

Layoffs: 0

Impact: The college opened in 2006 and can’t fill all open faculty positions.

Gordon College

Cuts: 6

Layoffs: 0

Impact: None provided.

Macon State College

Cuts: 19

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Reduced hours for the library, computer labs and counseling and advising centers.

Middle Georgia College

Cuts: 18

Layoffs:1

Impact: Relying more on part-time or temporary full-time faculty.

Atlanta Metropolitan College

Cuts: 1

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Student services will remain stable.

Bainbridge College

Cuts:8

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Expect larger classes. Reduced number of classes offered off-site.

East Georgia College

Cuts: 5

Layoffs: 1

Impact: Faculty facing teaching assignment overloads.

Georgia Highlands College

Cuts: 0

Layoffs: 5

Impact: Closed some programs on the Rome campus.

Georgia Perimeter College

Cuts: 41

Layoffs: 9

Impact: More classes taught by part-time faculty and cuts in some student services.

South Georgia College

Cuts: 11

Impact: 0

Impact: Limited ability to improve freshman year for students.

Waycross College

Cuts: 2

Layoffs: 0

Impact: Fewer students will have campus jobs.
