Ever wonder what happens to costumes and props from plays gone by?

Atlanta’s Theatrical Outfit plans a five-day sale to let the public sort through costumes and clothing that it doesn’t plan to use in future productions. Items range from a pair of fashionable orange high-heels from “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” and beaded ball gowns to ragtag “distressed” pieces used by actors who played down-on-their luck characters in “Big River.”

“A lot of times we get people calling because of our name,” said Tom Key, executive artistic director of the downtown theatrical company. “This is the one time of the year when we get to deliver.”

Over time, the costume closet runneth over, said General Manager Rochelle Barker. That includes “a gazillion shoes,” from sizes six to 13. “Shoes that are so unique are less useful,” she said. “We try to keep more generic-looking shoes so a person at one play won’t say ‘Oh, those are the shoes from ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

Theatrical Outfit has held previous sales but took a breather for about two years.    This year, it expects to raise between $500 and $1,000, which will be used, in part, to help offset parking costs for interns. Prices range from 50 cents to $30.

The sale runs from noon until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s, 84 Luckie St.
