GENEALOGY
By Kenneth H. Thomas Jr.
For the AJC
The Georgia Archives will play host to Georgia Archives and Genealogy Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19.
The day is billed as one of fun and education, during which the public can learn more about the Archives and genealogy. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch is on your own.
Sponsoring organizations on hand with information about their activities will include the R.J. Taylor Jr. Foundation, the Georgia Genealogical Society, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society-Metro-Atlanta Chapter, the Friends of Georgia Archives and History, the Society of Georgia Archivists and the Southeast Regional Conservation Association.
Speakers and topics will be: Susan Sloan on genealogy at the courthouse; Vivian Price Saffold on the Taylor Foundation’s publication grants; this columnist on changes in genealogy; and a speaker will discuss disaster planning. Other speakers will be added.
This should be a great time to come to the Georgia Archives, hear good speakers, and visit the various information booths.
The event will be held at the Georgia Archives, 5800 Jonesboro Road, Morrow. For further information, check www.georgiaarchives.org or email christopher.davidson@usg.edu.
Jackson County newspapers
Faye Stone Poss, noted abstractor of Georgia records and newspapers, has turned her attention again to Jackson County, where she previously published deeds and wills. Her fourth volume on the county’s newspapers is “Jackson County, Georgia, Newspaper Clippings, Jackson Herald, 1886-1890.”
She has pulled great details from the comings and goings of citizens, marriages, deaths, and all kinds of information to aid genealogists as well as historians in understanding how people lived then. This book can be used to verify who was living there in 1890 in lieu of that census. The information makes interesting reading since she has lifted the data just as written in the era. She includes legal notices in chart format, and photographs of local citizens.
The volume was published with a grant from the R.J. Taylor Jr. Foundation. It is available for $35 postpaid from Faye Stone Poss, 2767 Centerville Rosebud Road, Snellville, GA 30039-5517. Her website is http://fayestoneposs.tripod.com.
