Jail officials: Fulton inmate sets himself on fire
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A Fulton County jail inmate in prison on murder charges set himself on fire, jail officials said.
Jeremy Moody, awaiting trial for the 2007 deaths of College Park cousins Delarlonva "Del" Mattox Jr., 15, and 13-year-old Chrisondra Sierra Kimble, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital last week after the fire, jail spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.
Around 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 12, Flanagan said Moody set himself on fire.
Moody's family told WSB TV they didn't believe the jail's report and is asking for an external investigation.
“Setting himself on fire would just not be something that he would do,” Moody’s brother, Jason Moody Jr. told WSB.
Chrisondra was staying with Del's family during spring break, and the two walked a neighborhood store that Thursday to get snacks. They never returned home.
Police arrested Moody, who was 29 at the time, was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and rape, in addition to the murder charges. Investigators said Moody was a stranger to both teens and was likely trying to rob them.
Arson investigators from the Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department, and the Fulton County Sheriff's office of internal affairs are conducting separate investigations into the incident, Flanagan said.
Moody's case was scheduled to go to trial this spring, she said.
