High school students launch crusade against droopy pants

While the Richmond County Board of Education was grappling with what the school district could do about people wearing droopy pants to extracurricular events, the students at Cross Creek High School were doing something.

On Thursday, they held a pep rally wrapping up a week with the theme, "Pull your pants up!"

That same slogan was written in large letters on the gymnasium wall and was chanted by students throughout the rally.

"People are always going to criticize you, but they'll do it more if you have saggy pants," student Ashley Lewis told the crowd, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

The saggy pants fad mimics the look of jail inmates who aren’t allowed to wear belts that they could use to hang themselves. One of the speakers asked students if that was the image they wanted to convey?

The week-long “pull your pants up” campaign is part of a larger program that runs through the school year, Jobs for Georgia Graduates.

Last month, the Richmond County Board of Education discussed the possibility of banning those wearing saggy pants from after-school events such as football games. But the board has not voted on any policy yet.
