A Grayson woman has been charged with arson and cruelty to animals after she allegedly set fire to a home she was renting, killing her two cats.

The fire took place Oct. 6 in the 8500 block of Lake Drive in Snellville. Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Tommy Rutledge said investigators found an accelerant inside the home where Sarah Sheridan, 27, was living alone.

Firefighters arrived just after 10:30 p.m. to find heavy smoke pouring out of the front of the two-story wood frame house. The blaze caused heavy damage to the basement where the cats were trapped.

Investigators are not releasing the motive, but Rutledge said sufficient evidence was found to make an arrest. Sheridan was taken into custody on Wednesday and posted a $30,000 bond the following day. She is charged with one count each of first degree arson, cruelty to animals and providing false statements to police.
