A unique pedestrian signal in Suwanee was recognized this week with a Golden Shoe Award for outstanding pedestrian-friendly initiatives.

The first of its kind in Georgia, Suwanee's High Intensity Activated Crosswalk signal was activated at Buford Highway and Town Center Avenue in August to offer safer pedestrian access between Town Center and historic Old Town.

Called HAWK, it uses a unique set of flashing lights and symbols, similar to a traffic light, to direct drivers and pedestrians. It cost about $84,000, funded through the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

It is used in Tucson, Ariz., and Raleigh.
