Gwinnett County police say a woman who ran an assisted-living facility stole at least $10,000 from a man in her care, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Veronica Martin, 39, turned herself in on Friday and was charged with elder abuse. She was released several hours later, according to Gwinnett County jail records.

Investigators with Georgia Adult Protective Services discovered that the man's rent increased from $1,000 a month to $3,500, according to the report.

"The investigation showed that she had access to his records and she posed as a family member, gaining access to his records and his money," Cpl. Edwin Ritter with Gwinnett police told Channel 2. "The investigator was able to show that she was responsible for at least $10,000. He's missing up to $50,000."
