A 44-year-old woman from south Georgia was  killed late Saturday night when she was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a Gwinnett County road, police said Monday.

Sherri D. Parker of Thomasville was walking along Buford Highway south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday when she stepped off the curb into and into the path of a southbound 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

Parker was hit by the Jeep, and died at the scene, Ritter said.

"It appears that the pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway in an area that does not have a marked crosswalk," Ritter said. He said no charges have been filed against the 22-year-old driver of the Jeep, but the investigation is continuing.
