Parking in downtown Norcross just got a bit easier for patrons to the historic district.

City leaders this week amended the municipality's ordinances to designate specific parking areas for city employees, merchants and those merchants' employees -- in lots within walking distance of downtown shops.

"We had to find a way to add parking spaces for those pedestrian-friendly areas," said economic development manager Steven Bush.

Bush said the City Council's action frees up 236 parking spaces in the historic district, which features a slew of restaurants and shops.

City employees now will park in the lot next to the public works facility, and merchants will park behind City Hall on Lawrenceville Street.
