Lilburn man fends off home invaders

Police credit a Lilburn man with single-handedly fending off a pair of armed home invaders Friday afternoon.

Two men knocked on the resident's door at The Villas apartment complex at 1300 Stoneview Trail and tried to force their way inside when the resident answered. As the resident struggled to bar the door, one of the intruders brandished a handgun and pushed him down the stairs, said Lilburn Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Weed.

The victim suffered minor scratches and bruises, but succeeded in scaring off the two men. Weed did not immediately release the victim's name. They said he was a 31-year-old man.

""He definitely was able to stay composed throughout the whole ordeal and provide us with information that helped catch these guys," Weed said.

Several witnesses provided police with a description of the getaway vehicle, a beige Acura Integra. Officers set up a perimeter in the area and located the suspects in their car a short time later, Weed said.

Walter Umana-Giron, 18, of Duluth, and Daygoro Helena, 18, of Lilburn, will be charged with aggravated assault. Other related charges are pending.

Police said it is too soon to tell why the victim was targeted.

"We don't have a clear motive right now," Weed said.
