Firefighters who rushed to a reported drowning at a Lawrenceville apartment complex Sunday evening arrived too late.

They found a 4-year-old girl poolside with bystanders trying to resuscitate her, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters tried to revive her while rushing her to Gwinnett Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead soon after arrival, Rutledge said.

The latest incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at the Durant at Sugarloaf Apartments, in the 400 block of Saint Marlowe Drive in Lawrenceville.

The child, whose name is being withheld, was

at the pool with her father and a sibling. Several other people were in the pool when someone noticed her still body and pulled her from the water, Rutledge said. The drowning "appears accidental," he said.

The girl was the second child to drown in Gwinnett in recent weeks.
