Georgia school board to meet to look at furloughs

Associated Press

The state Board of Education has called a meeting for next week to adopt measures that would pave the way for school districts to furlough teachers and other employees.

The board will meet Tuesday at 8 a.m. to consider waivers to the number of days the state requires each school district employee to work. Gov. Sonny Perdue called this week for the state's 128,000 public school teachers to take three unpaid furlough days by the end of the calendar year.

The school districts are not required to enact the furloughs, but the state is cutting the sum of those days' salaries from the districts' funding. Most of the state's 180 school districts are expected to go along with the furloughs.
