Senate education committee backs pay bill, school bus repairs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Senate committee members gave their approval to two education-related House bills Tuesday.
Election 2012: Across the nation
The first, HB 977, bars school systems from using state funds to raise administrators' pay if they furlough teachers and other employees the same year.
It would also force a system to hold a public hearing on such raises, even if the school board only uses local money to pay for them.
The issue was highlighted in January when the DeKalb County school board gave its superintendent a $15,000-a-year raise despite protests by staff and parents.
The Senate Education and Youth Committee also passed HB 936, which would allow school systems to seek state funds to repair -- not just replace -- their school buses.
Such repairs are often cheaper than purchase, although they would still be subject to all safety and maintenance requirements.
