James returns to state Senate in Kasim Reed's seat

James pulled 53 percent of the vote to defeat Torrey Johnson, who earned 47 percent, according to unofficial returns. Both are Democrats.
James had represented the district in the 1990s. She had also run for Congress, challenging Democratic incumbent David Scott.
The 35th state Senate District in southwest Fulton County was left vacant when Kasim Reed stepped aside to run for mayor of Atlanta.
