House passes bill to allow guns in parts of airports
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Georgia House gave final passage Tuesday to a bill that would expand licensed gun-holders' rights to carry in parts of airports.
Election 2012: Across the nation
The bill, sponsored by state Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth), has strong support from the National Rifle Association, said Rep. Katie Dempsey (R-Rome), who shepherded the bill through the House late Tuesday.
The bill allows gun permit holders to carry their weapons in nonsecure areas of an airport, Dempsey said.
Other provisions also prohibit firearm seizure and registration by the federal government, she said.
Before the bill passed, Rep. Stephanie Benfield (D-Atlanta) asked: “How are citizens safer by allowing firearms in airports?”
The bill passed 120-37.
