Good young felons to get break
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gov. Nathan Deal was to sign a bill Wednesday allowing juvenile court judges to modify sentences of youthful felons who show good behavior, rehabilitation and academic achievement while in a youth detention center for 12 to 60 months, the Department of Juvenile Justice announced.
Election 2012: Across the nation
Juvenile Justice Department Commissioner Amy Howell said the "Good Behavior Bill" would incentivize delinquents to rehabilitate themselves and none too soon. The department said such felons already take up a large number of beds in Youth Development Campuses and in short term Regional Youth Detention Centers. But the department said the bill is not for space management and at the moment would have little impact.
Right now "few are qualified for good behavior recommendations," a press release said.
The bill, HB 373, was sponsored by Rep. B.J. Pak, R-Lilburn and Sen, Joshua McKoon, R-Columbus.
