A Georgia Department of Transportation employee was among those wounded in the Nov. 5 shooting at Ft. Hood, state Transportation Commissioner Vance Smith said Thursday.

Private First Class James Armstrong, a mental health specialist with the 1908th medical detachment, was being processed for a deployment when the shooting erupted, DOT officials said.  He was shot twice and recognized for heroism in helping fellow soldiers at the scene. He is recovering.

According to DOT spokeswoman Cissy McNure, in his civilian job Armstrong worked out of the department’s Milledgeville office in road construction.
