Despite economy, Ga. lottery profits rise

Georgia Lottery Corp. officials say profits rose slightly over this time last year despite the sagging economy.

The lottery said Friday it brought in $215 million during its first quarter of fiscal year 2010, up from $214 million for the same period last year. The first quarter of the fiscal year is from July 1 to Sept. 30.
Georgia Lottery proceeds fund the HOPE scholarship program and free pre-kindergarten for 4-year-olds. Since it opened in 1993, the lottery has raised more than $11 billion that went to scholarships for 1 million students and pre-K for 940,000 children.
