Deal appointees: Many neighbors, donors

Georgia’s governor is responsible for appointing hundreds of people to dozens of state boards and commissions that oversee everything from the colleges and universities to plumbers and chiropractors.

In his first five months in office, Gov. Nathan Deal has filled more than 80 of these slots. Of those, however, all but four are white, all but 15 are men and dozens contributed to his 2010 campaign.

While the governor’s staff says the state doesn’t ask for a person’s race when they apply for an appointment, a public management expert says Deal ought to be doing more to make sure his administration more closely reflects the state’s population.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution used state voter rolls, social sites like Facebook and business, government and other web sites to analyze more than 300 gubernatorial appointees spanning two administrations.
