The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Decrying "the destructive and insidious nature of the United Nations Agenda 21," a top Republican lawmaker asked his colleagues Thursday to publicly disavow it.

Agenda 21 is a U.N. plan envisioned two decades ago to promote sustainable development. Among its targets is climate change and poverty. It includes a call to action on such things as smart growth, transportation planning and environmentally friendly practices.

The plan, however, has come under attack from some tea party groups and conservative activists.

Senate Resolution 730, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, compares the plan to socialism and communism, saying its "extreme environmentalism, social engineering and global political control" is a threat to the American way of life. SR 730 was referred to committee.
