Associated Press

Georgia will receive more than $8.7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds for transit improvements across the state.

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority will use the money for the purchase of one 45-foot commuter bus, construction of park and ride lots, surveillance and security equipment, miscellaneous station equipment, maintenance facilities, shop equipment, and preventive maintenance.

Since President Barack Obama signed ARRA into law on Feb. 17, grants totaling more than $7.2 billion have been made available for transit improvements throughout the nation.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is making $48.1 billion available for highway, road, transit, bridge and airport construction and repairs nationwide.
