AUGUSTA — A Bryan County volunteer firefighter infected with the so-called flesh-eating disease during a training accident has died.

Bryan County Emergency Services Director Jim Anderson identifies the man as Terrell Nielsen.

Department officials say he hurt his left arm on June 22 while training and soon began experiencing severe pain, nausea and fever. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah on July 23 and diagnosed with necrotizing faciitis. He later was taken to an Augusta hospital, where he remained until his death Thursday.

Fire department officials did not immediately return phone calls to detail the original accident.
