Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has left Facebook after fielding too many requests from users of the social networking tool wanting to be his "friend," according to AFP.

Gates, who was honored on Saturday in India for his charity work, said in New Delhi that he received more than "10,000 people wanting to be my friends" but had trouble determining if he "knew this person, did I not know this person."

"It was just way too much trouble so I gave it up," the Microsoft chairman told the business forum.

In 2007, Microsoft agreed to buy a piece of the social networking site for $240 million.

Gates, who received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development from India's president for his work with the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation, said technology has been "hugely beneficial" but, "All these tools of tech waste our time if we're not careful."
