Fewer deaths, more wrecks over holiday weekend
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Fewer people than expected died on Georgia roads over the holiday weekend. But there were 361 more crashes than predicted.
Eight people, including two in the metro Atlanta area, were killed in traffic accidents during the 78-hour period beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and ending Monday at midnight.
Anthony Tyrone Anderson, 38, of Smyrna was killed Sunday about 3:45 p.m. when the motorcycle he was on collided with another motorcycle.
In a separate incident Sunday night, 44-year-old John Frederick Freeman of McDonough was killed while fleeing from police.
The state Department of Public Safety predicted 18 deaths over the three-day weekend — one less than the number killed over the same period last year.
There were 2,231 crashes resulting in 614 injuries over the weekend, according to officials. In 2008, there 1,660 accidents, injuring 798 people.
