Georgians for Smart Energy, a group of statewide pro-clean energy organizations, is holding a public hearing today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kennesaw State University on the impact of a proposed coal-fired power plant in Middle Georgia.

Pollution coming from the proposed Plant Washington in Sandersville would affect air and water quality in the entire state, alleges Mary Carr, renewable energy coordinator with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, a member of the group.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has issued draft permits for the proposed plant in Washington County, and it will have a public hearing on the issue on Oct. 20 in Sandersville. The hearing today at KSU, will be held in the Social Sciences Building, Room 3030, 1000 Chastain Road.

It is one of three hearings that Georgians for Smart Energy is sponsoring throughout the state today. The others are in Macon and Augusta. For more information, contact Midge Sweet with Georgians for Smart Energy at 404-688-5430. MARY LOU PICKEL
