Driver Services brakes for first furlough day
Associated Press
The Department of Driver Services will be closed Thursday for the first of four scheduled furlough days.
The agency will reopen on Friday. Furlough days are also scheduled for Nov. 19, Dec. 18 and Jan. 28.
The department's Web site will be available for some transactions, such as making address changes or requesting a replacement for a lost driver's license.
Other state agencies are facing a similar dilemma after Gov. Perdue ordered all of them to slash 5 percent from their spending plans to help fill a $900 million budget shortfall amid plummeting tax collections. School teachers and employees at the state's universities are also among the state workers being forced to take unpaid days off.
